A second-quarter explosion propelled the Union Pines girls’ basketball team to its sixth win in a row Tuesday at Union Pines.
The Viking boys also picked up a win in the Tri-County 6 Conference doubleheader, knocking off Southern Lee in dramatic fashion 49-47.
The Viking girls started the doubleheader by picking up a 63-41 win over the Lady Cavs.
Behind a 31-6 second-quarter run, the Lady Vikings improved to 14-7 overall, but more importantly remained on top of the conference standings with a 6-1 record.
The Vikings got a double-double from Molly Schmitz while three other Vikings scored in double figures.
Schmitz finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Emily Bowbliss was the Vikings’ leading scorer with 17 points. Joining those two in double figures were Sara Adams with 16 and Emma Ring with 11. Adams had the lone three-pointer for Union Pines.
The Viking scoring was rounded out by Kaley Evans, Maggie McCaskill and Raegan Chapman with two points each.
Lee County was led by Kayla Taylor with 16. Olivia Norris added 13 for the Lady Cavs.
In Tuesday’s boys’ contest, Union Pines’ Jalen Eberhart hit a three-pointer with seven seconds left to give the Vikings a 48-47 lead. Archie Chandler would hit a free throw to bring in the final 49-47 count.
Seven different Vikings got in the scoring column, led by Eberhart with 10. Ahmad Jones and Mason Chavis had eight each for the Vikings while Isaiah Robbins had seven.
The Viking scoring was rounded out by Jacob Bowbliss with six while Tyreek McCoy and Archie Chandler had five points each.
Union Pines is now 9-12 overall and 3-4 in the conference.
Union Pines’ doubleheader with Southern Lee Friday was postponed. It will be played Monday at Southern Lee.
