With a tough 3-2 win over Southern Lee Thursday, Union Pines is closing in on its third consecutive conference championship in volleyball.
The Vikings defeated the Cavs 26-24, 22-25, 13-25, 29-27 and 15-12 in Sanford to improve to 8-0 (19-2 overall) in the Tri-County 6 Conference, with two league matches remaining.
Second-place Southern Lee is two games behind at 6-2 in the conference, also with two matches remaining.
Union Pines will face Triton at home Tuesday on Senior night and then end its regular season with an away match Thursday at Western Harnett.
In Thursday’s win, the Vikings were led by Kaley Evans with 33 assists, 21 digs and three kills; Gianna Silvestri with 32 digs, 10 kills and four aces; Morgan Prots with 29 digs, 13 kills and three aces; and Anistyn Deese with 15 kills, four digs and three aces.
Other solid Viking performances in the nail-biting win were Shelby Hull with 35 digs; Alana Kolb with seven blocks and four kills; Taylor Parker with seven digs; and Emma Vacha with six kills and six blocks.
