The Moore Parks and Recreation Department sponsored the John Frye Tennis Prep School that recently completed six weeks of training at Union Pines High School.
Camps were provided for beginners, intermediates and advanced players. Sessions were devoted to drills, skills and competitions for players at all levels.
John Frye served as camp director, with Joseph Lynch, Matt Downing, Kevin Criscoe, Mary Beth Jackson and Will Hart assisting as teaching instructors.
Lynch was a three-time conference champion and a four-time all-conference performer at Union Pines, and an Appalachian State University graduate where he played tennis for the Mountaineers.
Downing won multiple championships at Pinecrest High School and is both a teaching professional and serves as director of tennis at the Pinehurst Tennis Club.
Criscoe was a four-time champion at Union Pines and a stellar player at Methodist University. He is a recent inductee into Union Pines’ Sports Hall of Fame.
Jackson teamed with Hailee Haymore to capture the 2015 girls’ state 3-A doubles championship and is a two-time conference MVP and recent UNC-Wilmington graduate where she excelled in club tennis.
Hart is a three-time titliest and leads all 3-A players at Union Pines in career wins in addition to winning the boys’ 18 NC Closed State championship in doubles. He is playing at Appalachian State University.
In the advanced session competition winners were: volleys — Jake Moubry, Davis Moubry, Anna Ragsdale, Eleanor Slyman, Lily Slyman, Sophia Pandich, McKayla Kirk, Clara Kellner, Shawn Rutkofske, Carter Leonard, Luke O’Donnell and Caleb Downing; overheads — Sara Adams, Davis Moubry, Carter Leonard, Caleb Downing, Joey Tortora, Shawn Rutkofske; groundstrokes — Jake Moubry, Luke O’Donnell, Aaron Scodius, McKayla Kirk, Eleanor Slyman, Sara Adams, Sophia Pandich, Lily Slyman, Clara Kellner, Caleb Downing, Anna Ragsdale, and Abbie Prim; serve — Shawn Rutkofske, Joey Tortora, Luke O’Donnell, and Aaron Scodius.
Forty-three players attended the 13 sessions and 32 hours of training.
In addition to the instructors, assistants included Tyrone Ross, Lee McPherson, Holly Appanaitis Edwards and Lee Edwards.
