When The Pilot was a young newspaper, Dixie Battley Ray worked on the linotype machine to get the news ready to print. For several years in the 1930s, she set on the linotype machine every inch of news in The Pilot.
Dixie Battley Ray was a trailblazer because few women worked outside the home. She worked at The Pilot for 28 years and retired on Aug. 2, 1969.
