I saw Sen. Thom Tillis standing behind Sen. Mitch McConnell during the press briefing called to crow about passing the Republican tax bill. This bill is nothing to crow about.
After a few years of tiny cuts, most of us will be saddled with higher taxes, while the wealthy and corporations will enjoy sizeable permanent cuts.
Among other things, this bill will make it harder for young people to go to college, harder for the disabled to find jobs, harder for senior citizens to pay for nursing home care, and harder for states and local governments to offer a broad array of services their citizens rely on.
It will also burden our children and grandchildren with more than $1 trillion in additional federal debt. It is clear to me that Sens. Burr and Tillis and Mr. Hudson, all of whom support this legislation, do not value the welfare of the people of North Carolina.
They are an embarrassment to all of us, and I look forward to their defeat in future elections.
