Martin Johnson

Martin Wade Johnson, 55, of Vass, passed away peacefully Friday, Aug. 9, 2019, at FirstHealth Hospice in Pinehurst. He fought an inspiring five-month battle, after suffering a seizure, from a previously undiagnosed condition. He is now at peace and joyfully in the presence of his Savior. He leaves behind his wife and seven young children.

Martin was born Oct. 19, 1963, in Houston, Texas. He spent his childhood in Shreveport, La., and attended Louisiana State University. During his freshman year, he joined the Army National Guard. Upon graduation from college, he was commissioned as an officer within the U.S. Army National Guard Special Forces, 20th Group.

While in Macon, Ga., he met his beautiful wife, Kimberly Jeanette Ashmore, at a local church. They were married the following year and blessed with seven amazing children in five years, including two sets of twins.

During his time in Georgia, he worked for the Georgia Department of Corrections as a member of the Tactical Squadron. Additionally, he served as an employee with Norfolk Southern Railroad for seven years.

In 2014, Martin and his family relocated to Moore County, and Martin worked as a contractor for the Department of Defense until 2018. It was later in life, that Martin finally discovered his ultimate career and niche, serving as a caddy for Caddy Masters Inc., based in Pinehurst. During his tenure as a caddy, Martin thrived at talking up local golf enthusiasts and visiting golf professionals alike.

Martin was happiest talking up strangers, new friends and family. He loved debating theology, but most of all loved sharing the love of Jesus Christ. When he was not spending time with friends and family, he was coaching the LSU football team from the family sofa and enjoying the game of golf. Martin was larger than life and will truly be missed by those who knew him.

Martin was preceded in death by his father, Henry Martin Johnson; and grandparents, Berlyn S. and Mary McCoskey, Henry P. Johnson and Jocie Lee Barnett Johnson
