Dr. John Charles Wain

Dr. John Charles Wain, 92, of Southern Pines and West Homestead, Pa., died Wednesday, July 31, 2019.

He was a son of the late Joseph and Catharine Wain; beloved husband of Susan (Howe) Wain and the late Lillian; loving father of John Charles (Collette) Wain., M.D., Esther Ruth Wain-Weiss and Rebecca Lillian (Scott Nye) Wain; cherished grandfather of Thomas Anthony Weiss, Matthew Jonathan Weiss, Peter James Weiss, Elizabeth Ruth Weiss, John Charles Wain III, Lily Constance Wain and Laurel Haye Wain; stepgrandfather of Lillyanne Wain-Nye,  and Charles Scott Wain-Nye; brother of William (Loretta) Scott Wain; uncle of David William (Hay-Wun) Wain and Laura Clark; great-uncle of Bryan Clark, Nicole Christine Wain, Ashley Lauren Wain  and Catharine Ann Wain and great grand-dog, Kit.

Charlie was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved cars, skiing and walking on the beach at Singer Island and Wrightsville Beach. He traveled all over the world with his children and first wife, Lillian in Russia, China, Japan, Africa, Hawaii, London, the Isle of Jersey, Paris, Brussels and Scandinavia. His main love was cars. He could tell details about cars from the beginning of the motor cars to the present. 

He especially enjoyed the adventures of the Rolls-Royce Owners Club and the places of the annual meeting held around the country from coast to coast.

In Williamsburg in 2008, his 1991 Silver Spur II won first place out of 40 cars in that group of the Touring Class in the 57th annual Rolls Royce Owners Club meet. He moved two years ago to a house in Southern Pines he thought to be the most beautiful house he was ever in.

His favorite song was "Summit Ridge Drive,” by Artie Shaw; his favorite quote was “Benny Goodman played notes; Artie Shaw played Music!!” His daily quote was “War is the dumbest thing we do.”

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member and former trustee of the Shadyside Presbyterian Church. He practiced medicine in the Steel Valley area for more than 42 years. He was a member of St. Andrew’s Society of North Carolina for more than 30 years; member of F&AM Lodge No. 582, Scottish Rite and Syria Shriners more than 60 years; and former member of the board of directors of the Pitcairn-Crabbe Foundation

A committal service will be Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in Jefferson Memorial Park, Pleasant Hills, Pa. Pallbearers will include John Wain, Jr. M.D., Milton Mass.; Jack Wain Milton, Mass.; Bill Casey, Pittsburgh Pa.; Steve Apter, Export, Pa.; Matthew Weiss, Cuyahaga Falls Ohio, Peter Weiss, Cuyahaga Falls, Ohio, Sean O'Connell, Willard, Bryan Clark, Fort Mills, S.C., and David Wain, Medina, Minn.
