James O. Covington, 88, of Aberdeen, passed away Monday, Sept. 2, 2019, at the Pinehurst Heath and Rehab Center.
James was born and raised in Richmond County and served his country in the United States Marine Corps. On Dec. 27, 1951, he married Agnes McDonald.
After his honorable discharge from the Marines, James lived in Wilmington, Norman and Mt. Gilead before settling in Aberdeen in the 1960s. He soon started to work for Pinehurst Hardware, a career that spanned 30 years.
James enjoyed working outdoors, tending to the yard and mowing the lawn. He was a member of the Norman Presbyterian Church. The thing that gave him the most joy was spending time with his family.
James is survived by his wife, Agnes McDonald Covington; children, Phyllis C. Jones (Doug), of Salisbury, and Stephen E. Covington Sr. (Suzie), of Hilliard, Fla.; grandchildren, Melissa J. Schlee (Joe), of Apex, Andrea Baxley (Kyle,) of Pinehurst, and Stephen E. Covington II, of Seattle; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Katie and Lexi Schlee; siblings, Shirley C. Blake (Don), of Troy, Va., C. Burroughs, of Mt. Gilead, Victoria C. Ochytun (John), of Ellerbe, Alton Covington (Doris), of Mt. Gilead, and Curtis Covington (Belle), of Candor. James was preceded in death by his parents, Judson and Mozelle Warner Covington; an infant son; grandson Samuel R. Covington; sisters Josephine C. Russell and Ardele C. Reynolds.
A funeral service will be held at the Norman Presbyterian Church 3689 U.S. 220 North, Norman, NC 28367, on Wednesday, Sept. 4, at p.m. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service from 1–2 p.m. The Rev. Jack Bowling will conduct the services.
