Gloria Goldenberg

Gloria Goldenberg, of West End, mother of three, grandmother of seven, great-grandmother of seven—and friend to everyone who ever met her, passed away peacefully Monday, Dec. 2, 2019, at 90.

Born Gloria Comisar in Rochester, N.Y., on April 25, 1929, she was the middle of three children. Gloria married Edwin Goldenberg on Christmas Day, 1948, and they raised their family outside of New York City.

Artistically inclined, Gloria became a talented painter. Once her kids were older, she began a career as a nursery schoolteacher.

Gloria’s love of people was evident in her abundant kindness. The way she took an interest in people always made them feel special. Many claimed her as a best friend.

Gloria was proud of her Jewish heritage and she bat mitzvahed at the age of 50. She was active in her synagogue on Long Island, where she made many lifelong friends.

After retirement, Gloria and Ed traveled the world, where she reveled in artistic treasures. Naturally she made sure to come home with gifts for everyone. (“This made me think of you, so I got it,” was a common refrain.)

Ed passed away in 2006, and Gloria moved to North Carolina to be closer to family. She will be remembered for the abundance of love she brought to this world by her children Dave (and daughter-in-law Lee), Sue Stovall (of West End) and Amy; her grandchildren, Ariel Kowalick-Davenport (of Pinehurst), Jamie, Kassia Stubbs (of West End), Shanna, Michael, Nicole and Danny; and her great-grandchildren, Charlee Rose, Piper, Anaïs, Kestrel, Alice, Hudson and Ruby Quinn. She leaves them behind, along with her brother, Jerry, and sister-in-law, Linda.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Dec. 7, at 11 a.m. at Boles Pinehurst. Donations may be made in Gloria’s memory to the charity of your choice, but what she wanted most was for everyone to be kind to each other.
