Chleyon Brown, of Southern Pines, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2019, at FirstHealth Hospice House, in Pinehurst.
Born in 1919 in Barberton, Ohio, she was married for 53 years to her loving husband, Hugh.
Chleyon attended Akron University and later was one of the first women in Indiana to earn her CPCU. She worked as an insurance casualty underwriter in Noblesville and Indianapolis, where she raised her family, a daughter and twin boys.
Chleyon’s “family” also included her Brownie/Girl Scout troop of 11 girls who at the age of 16 traveled with her and an assistant troop leader to Europe for three months, where they visited 13 different countries. The tour was financed completely by various money-making projects and activities that Chleyon created during the four-year period prior to the trip. Beginning in 1990 through 2019, eight of her former Girl Scouts continued to travel to Pinehurst to help her celebrate her birthday. They were here to help her celebrate her 100th.
Chleyon and Hugh retired to Cape Coral, Fla., for 20 years, where they enjoyed golf, bicycling and dancing. President of the Cape Coral Women’s Golf Association, she was an accomplished seamstress, and avid bridge player.
In 1999, Chleyon moved to Knollwood Village in Southern Pines, continuing with her sewing, bridge and traveling to visit children and grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh, in 1997; and one brother, Tom Bahn, of Akron, Ohio. She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn (Bill); sons, Jim (Corina) and Tom (Mary); eight grandchildren,; 16 great-grandchildren; and her beloved cat, Jorgi, who never left her side.
The family wishes to thank FirstHealth Hospice of Pinehurst, Aging Outreach Services and especially all the wonderful caregivers who helped her over many years.
A Mass and reception will be held at a future date, at St. Anthony’s of Padua Catholic Church.
