Warrior Woods Lake in Southern Pines

Warrior Woods Lake in Southern Pines.

An undetermined amount of untreated wastewater has been spilled in a Southern Pines creek.

The town issued an advisory Tuesday notifying residents of the spill, which was reported about 10:30 a.m. at Mill Creek, which connects to Warrior Woods Lake near the Moore County Airport. Officials said the spill was caused by a leaking sewer main.

According to the advisory, the sewer main has required “several repairs in the last few years” and was in the process of being replaced when the leak was discovered. The town said the extent of the contamination was not immediately clear.

“The exact amount of the spill is unknown at this time,” the advisory said. “Once repairs are completed, this volume will be determined, and appropriate local and state reporting procedures (and) actions will commence.”

Residents are advised “to refrain from any activities” at Warrior Woods Lake until further notice.
