The Union Pines coach suspended this week after the school investigated claims of misconduct will not be returning to work, Moore County Schools officials said Friday.
Greg Mayer taught digital media at the high school and took over as head coach for the Lady Vikings basketball team in 2016.
The district did not comment on the nature of the investigation or the allegations involving Greg Mayer, saying personnel matters are protected by confidentiality laws. But it did confirm that he was initially suspended last week with pay while an investigation was conducted into the complaint.
At the conclusion of that investigation, the schools suspended Mayer for five days without pay, but he was scheduled to return to work on Monday.
"Greg Mayer has informed the Moore County Schools that for personal reasons, he will not be returning to service with the school system,” Catherine Murphy, the district’s communications director, said in a statement. “Mr. Mayer will remain on accumulated earned leave through the end of the school year."
Before 2016, Mayer was on Union Pines’ football coaching staff as offensive coordinator. He first came to Moore County Schools as a coach at Pinecrest in 2007.
