Squires

Austin Squires from Union, Kentucky, walks to the first tee on Course No. 2 at the 2019 U.S. Amateur Championship at the Pinehurst Resort and Country Club.

Austin Squires has continued his dramatic run at the U.S. Amateur at Pinehurst.

Squires, from Kentucky, had to go extra holes today in the round of 32 to earn a berth in the round of 16 that is underway at Pinehurst No. 2. He stopped Stefano Mazzoli of Italy in 19 holes this morning.

At one time he was 3 down to Mazzoli.

Squires knocked off medalist Brandon Wu 2 up in Wednesday’s round of 64. Squires had to survive a 27-man battle earlier Wednesday to reach match play. He was the last of three players to come out of the 27-man playoff that lasted nearly three and a-half hours.

Alex Fitzpatrick of England also went extra holes before topping Jack Trent of Australia in 21 holes.

Cooper Dossey, the fourth seed and the winner of the 2019 North and South at Pinehurst No. 2, fell to Blake Hathcoat in 20 holes.

The Coody twins — Parker and Pierceson — of Plano, Texas, both advanced to the round of 16
