TEASER Police, Southern Pines

A Rockingham man is in stable condition following an assault that occurred Friday evening, Nov. 29, in the Brookside apartment complex in Southern Pines.

The victim has been identified as Desmond Gould, 23, according to authorities. Southern Pines Police Captain Charles Campbell said the investigation is moving forward.

“There is a person of interest we are looking into,” he said, during a brief phone interview on Monday. “The department has a history of strong investigative processes and generally we bring these cases to a close quickly.”

Officers initially responded to a report of shots being fired in the 500 block of Shaw Avenue at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Upon arrival, they located the 23-year-old male victim who had sustained two gunshot wounds.

Campbell said the assault occurred near an apartment.

Gould was transported by helicopter to an area hospital for treatment and is expected to be released soon, Campbell said.
