An octogenarian was airlifted to Chapel Hill on Friday afternoon after a vehicle collided with her while she was walking along a state road between Carthage and Highfalls.
The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on Friday. The woman, an 82-year-old Carthage resident, was walking on Putnam Glendon Road near Putnam Friends Church, an area where the speed limit is 55 miles per hour.
Trooper Quinones of the N.C. Highway Patrol said that she walked into the roadway, apparently disoriented. The driver that hit her reportedly attempted to slow down and switch lanes, but she abruptly changed direction and moved in front of his Jeep.
Following the incident, the woman was alert with a possible broken arm but with no injuries that appeared to be life-threatening. She was airlifted from the church parking lot to UNC Hospitals for medical treatment.
