The Moore County Sheriff’s Office said a mother and her child were attacked last week by a rabid cat in the Westmoore community.

The attack happened Friday on N.C. 705 near Adams Road. Andy Conway of the Moore County Sheriff’s Office said a woman was scratched by a feral cat after the animal bit her young child.

Shortly after being captured by animal control officers, the cat “began to exhibit signs of distress” and died, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The animal later tested positive for rabies.

Conway said both victims received a course of shots to prevent the onset of the disease, which is nearly always fatal after symptoms develop.

People in the Westmoore area are asked to report any suspicious behavior in animals to the Animal Services division of the Sheriff’s Office. The division can be reached by calling (910) 947-2858.
