Five Guys new location

Five Guys in Southern Pines. Ted Fitzgerald/The Pilot

If you've ever wished that a ~ literal bag ~ of french fries could magically appear through your car window, you're in luck this Saturday at 11 a.m., when Five Guys opens at 105 Commerce Avenue (across from Lowe's on U.S. 15-501).

The Virginia-based franchise is also known for using fresh ground beef and offering a copious list of burger toppings and condiments to pick from.

The new restaurant will be open from 7 days a week from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. While indoor and outdoor seating will remain off-limits for now, you can order takeout and call 910-725-2230 when you arrive for curbside delivery. Five Guys also offers online ordering via their app and

The Southern Pines location is part of a total redevelopment of the same two-plus acre tract where the Mellow Mushroom restaurant once stood.

John Zhang, who owns the neighboring Red Bowl Asian Bistro, purchased the former restaurant property and closed bank building between Murray Hill Road and Commerce Avenue. Those two structures were demolished in June 2018.

In their place, the new Sandhill Commons shopping center features side-by-side mixed commercial buildings with interconnected parking lots to the rear. Other tenants include the new Panera Bread location, Aspen Dental, IHOP, and an independent branch of Charles Schwab financial consulting.

For those in the Charlotte area, drive across the state line to Rock Hill, South Carolina, and you can sit indoors at Five Guys, and any other restaurant. Nanny Cooper won’t allow us to do this in North Carolina. Where’s the logic in that?

The governor of South Carolina just isn't as smart as the governor of North Carolina.
