Read Across America Jeremiah Johnson

Area firefighters and other volunteers fanned out across Moore County on Monday morning to read to children at local daycare centers in recognition of Read Across America Day.

Sponsored by Growing Moore Readers and coordinated by Bonnie Archibald with Partners for Children & Families, firefighters from Southern Pines, Pinehurst, Aberdeen and Pinebluff, were joined by volunteers from Moore County Schools, Rebecca Bibb with Congressman Richard Hudson’s office, local Kiwanis Club members, and the Moore County Literacy Council. In total, 18 volunteer readers visited 26 different child care facilities.

Read Across America Week kicks off each year on the school day nearest to March 2, which is also Dr. Seuss’s birthday. The late author, Theodor Seuss Geisel, published more than 60 children’s books.

Each volunteer read A Wocket in my Pocket! by Dr. Seuss, plus another selection from Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.

Johnson selected The Gingerbread Man Loose on the Fire Truck by Laura Murray, and presented the children he visited with toy fire hats and a fire safety coloring book.
