The Bolshoi Ballet has canceled the remainder of the 2019-2020 season, including the last two performances scheduled at the Sunrise Theater.
“There has been an outpouring of community support for the nonprofit theater as ticket holders have generously donated their tickets back to the Sunrise rather than ask for a refund,” says MaryBeth Poplyk, executive director of the theater.
Remaining ticketholders are encouraged to contact the theater to convert their tickets to a tax-deductible donation or to request a refund.
“The Sunrise has been a proud host of the Bolshoi for many years and is very saddened, but not surprised, by the news,” says Poplyk. “The cancellations of the Bolshoi Ballet and the Met Opera seasons have had damaging effects on the theater’s financial situation.”
The Sunrise Theater has been closed since March 16, when all special events, movies, operas, ballets, concerts, plays and rentals ceased. Since that time, the theater has remained engaged with the community through entertaining marquee messages, Friday Curbside Concessions, and the launch of their Virtual Theater.
Indoor theaters and entertainment venues like the Sunrise are part of Phase 3 in North Carolina’s plan, and a reopen date has not been announced.
