“All the world’s a stage and all the men and women merely players!”  As You LikeIt is among Shakespeare's most gorgeous, adventurous, and funny plays about the miracle of love, forgiveness, redemption, and new beginnings. This masterpiece has delighted audiences all over the world for hundreds of years due to its perfect and miraculous balance of poetry and theatricality.  The play is deeply intelligent, yet it has a carefree and playful comedic tone in its delightful portrayal of young lovers’ falling deeply in love at first sight! And perhaps best of all, As You Like It presents the greatest comic female role Shakespeare ever created.

Families are encouraged to attend and to bring blankets or chairs for free lawn seating. There will be food and beverages for sale. Candle lit VIP Tables purchased in advance will seat up to 6 people close to the stage and provide two bottles of wine with an assortment of gourmet snacks and fine cheeses.

This is the third year for the Shakespeare in the Pines Theatre Festival in Pinehurst’s Tufts Park. Past years’ productions of Much Ado About Nothing, and A Midsummer Night’s Dreamwere enjoyed by over X000 people. Due to its popularity, this year’s Festival is once again presenting six performances over the two weekends in June.

Shakespeare in the Pines is the brainchild of Pinehurst residents Dr. Jonathan Drahos and Carolanne Marano, who together founded the Uprising Theatre Company in New York City in 1999.

“We founded the Uprising Theatre Company, understanding that the work of William Shakespeare continues to enrich our lives through its unique investigation of the human experience and its power to broaden cultural perspectives,” said Dr. Drahos, who earned a Ph.D. in Shakespearean and Marlovian Narrative Verse Acting from the University of Birmingham, UK.And is currently Associate Professor and Director of Theatre at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.”

Their dream for the Shakespeare in the Pines Festival is to expand the Free theatre offerings in the coming years. Drahos explained, “We are committed not only to producing high quality classical productions by Shakespeare and his contemporaries, but also inspired to offer venerated classic American plays and musicals — all in the beautiful and intimate outdoor environment that Tufts Park provides us. As we grow, we hope to present two or more plays per Festival. And we want to keep General Admission Free so everyone can enjoy it.”  Now that’s an idea everyone will like!
