A luxury lingerie shop tucked away on East New Hampshire Avenue in downtown Southern Pines was recently recognized with an international award for its Old World styling.

Knickers was one of 38 finalists in this year’s Best of Intima event, held in New York City on Aug. 4. This year more than 253 stores in North America were nominated.

Knickers won in the category of stores that pay homage to lingerie’s European roots, by bringing a selection of German, Swiss, and French brands to North American shoppers while imbuing a little je ne sais quois into their store atmosphere.

“We are thrilled and grateful to share this honor with our town and our patrons,” said owner Kerry Snyder Husted.

Husted started the business after a 30-year career as a healthcare administrator specializing in oncology therapy and treatment.

Knickers features intimate lines and select designers but, importantly, Husted also wanted to provide a place where all women could come in and feel good about themselves. With her professional background in clinical therapy and counseling, she knew there was also a strong need in the breast cancer survivor community for good fittings and exceptional personal services.

The voting jury in this year’s Best of Intima awards consisted of 23 international premium lingerie brands evaluating each store’s excellence in product knowledge, fitting expertise, customer service and product mix among other factors.

“For us, it is that old-school customer service that you don’t see as much in shops here in America,” Husted said. “It is more like we offer a service than it is retail.”

The brands she carries include very high-end sleepwear and loungewear, in addition to a comprehensive selection of bras. Regular fittings, including for mastectomy fittings, are complimentary.

“For the U.S. it is such a unique offering of getting back to that,” Husted said. “For a small shop in a small town to win an award like this is a huge achievement.”
