Ruth Akins

Ruth Akins

Ruth Akins celebrated her 104th birthday on Aug. 31, 2016, at the assisted living home where she resides.

Mrs. Akins is an inspiration to all that know her. She joined the Church at the age of 10. At St. John Missionary Baptist Church, she served on the Usher Board and taught Sunday School as a young adult for decades, until her health failed her.

She is affectionately known as “Ms. Tot.” Conversing with her today reveals her love for God and her heartfelt, sincere care for people.

Her celebration was attended by friends of the community and members of St. John Missionary Baptist Church, with its pastor, the Rev. Jimmy L. Gilchrist, as speaker, and Algene Johnson as mistress of ceremony. At closing, Mrs. Akins expressed her gratitude and love to everyone.

The town of Aberdeen declared Sept. 30, 2012, as Mrs. Ruth Akins Day.
