Moore Humane Society is pleased to announce that Teresa Engel has been elected President of the Board of Directors. Teresa succeeds Gary Kunce, who served as President for many years. Many of you will recognize Teresa as a frequent volunteer at offsite events, particularly Adoption Events at PetSmart.

"Moore Humane Society is an organization that I admire and fully support. I moved to Moore County from Hoke County in 2009. During our first year in Moore County, one of my dogs was taken from my yard. We presume he was stolen, possibly to be used for fighting. Working with Moore Humane has helped me ease my own pain, by helping other animals to find loving homes."

Moore Humane Society is also proud to announce a new board member, Rebecca Vassallo. Rebecca is a retired physician originally from Connecticut. She moved to Pinehurst in 1996 with her husband, Peter. In 1999 she became a volunteer for Moore Humane Society and Board member from 2000-2001.

Passionate about education and animals; Rebecca trained and had her dog Luther certified in 2002 as a therapy dog. The team made weekly visits to nursing homes, children centers and added Moore County School system in 2005, founding the "Luther and Friends", canine assisted reading education program. Requests for their services came from civic and church groups, Fort Bragg, children at risk programs and Headstart. They received many honors including the Jean Kistler Volunteer of the year award from Moore County Schools, the Governor's Award from the State of North Carolina, and were acknowledged by the North Carolina Reading Association.
