Parade in SP at 5pm?!?!!!

I am just curious who thought that 5:00pm was a good time to have a parade?? I am all for parades and events in Southern Pines but I question why no detour or warning signs were posted. I drove down to the BP and some woman told me I was not allowed to drive through because of the parade. No directions as to what way I could get around the parade just that I couldn't continue driving home from work.

In the future, give drivers some warning!!! And, perhaps rush hour isn't the best time for a parade??

The Pinecrest Homecoming Parade was at 5:30 in downtown Southern Pines yesterday. I didn't think it was a good time for it either. Should've been later in the day. When I was in high school the parade went all around the circle drive at the school, not across town. And that worked for us!

rush hour? really? never been downtown when I thought it looked like rush hour. I think its great we have a nice slower paced town that shuts down whenever it wants to have community events. I'm sorry I didn't know there was a parade so we could've been there.

melzabeth, hang out at the BP early in the morning or after 5PM, SP does indeed have a rush hour. You do realize that having a town "shut down" with no warning or detours is an inconvenience to many people. Growing up parades were a Saturday event, even the ones I have known of in this area. In fact, I have never heard of a school holding a parade at 5:30PM on busy public roads. As I stated earlier, I too enjoy events in SP...BUT I feel the timing, planning and execution of this even was very poor.

kgirl thanks for correcting me on the time. I came upon the disorganization at 5:20 and must have been at the very beginning of the parade. I assumed it had already started.

I'm thinking you've never been in a real rush hour. That's not a rush hour.

Pinecrest Homecoming Parade has always been at that time of day. Nothing new. Rush hour??? Wow. Try Cross Island Parkway at 5:30. Then let's talk about rush hour. Anyhow. Whatever time of day it's done, someone will be dissatisfied. Would that we all could please everyone with decisions we make. Pretty boring, I'd think. Wish I had known as well, but I was at a Middle School game. Oh well. Happy Thursday everyone.

Your thinking is incorrect melzabeth, I am from a large city.

Mythreekids...do they hold parades on the Cross Island Parkway????

You are both saying you wish you had known...me too so that I could have avoided the situation. I would be much less irritated if some detour signs had warned me or even if the woman in the Pinecrest staff badge could have given me some information on what streets I could take to avoid the parade, or what streets were closed due to the parade, or any helpful information. Not against parades, just poorly planned parades.

For future reference, downtown SP is laid out in blocks, you can avoid Broad St. by making one right, then one left, drive .75 miles, make another left followed by another right. You're welcome.

give it a rest melzabeth....it is rush hour for So Pines. Try crossing the street at the post office at 5:15. In fact, do it several times to give us all a good laugh. The real problem is that information on all the parades in Moore Co is very poorly communicated, especially in the Pilot. The info should be front page every day this week so everyone can make plans to attend or plans to avoid the area. Help us out Pilot!!!
