What's the deal with law breaking bicyclists?!

Now that the weather is nice I get to drive home at the time that the bicyclists come out. Why is it that they feel stop signs, yield signs, red lights and other traffic signage do not apply to them? I am SO sick of being on edge while driving through SP because I am waiting for a biker to ride in front of my car (cut me off) because they feel they are above the law.

Bikers that follow laws, thanks....please remind your friends that bikes are required by NC law to follow posted road signs.

And hope THEY have insurance to pay for your damages. Oh yes, if they run a stop or fail to yield the right of way THEY are charged. Sharing the road with bikes requires car drivers to be careful of them. Sharing the road also means that bike riders realized their rights can be trampled by a 2,000 plus pound automobile when they do something stupid. And you just can't fix stupid!

As a cyclist, I too get irritated at other cyclists who ride doubles or more and WILL NOT MOVE OVER no matter what. Some of the worst violators are some of the members of the local cycling club. They give other cyclists like myself a bad rap. I respect motorists (and try to get home alive ) while I ride by staying as far over to the rights as I can, by giving proper hand signals, and obeying traffic laws, and staying off heavily traveled roads.

@runorbike

I hear you. One would think the most serious cyclists would be the ones who wanted to protect cycling and promote respect for bikes as legal vehicles on the road.

Back in the day, I rode thousands of miles in group rides, so I know what it is like to ride in small and large groups of cyclists. A designated ride leader can go a long way towards getting the pack to obey the rules.

The worst offense I see regularly is smaller groups or singles who will pass stopped cars on the right at red lights and then "go straight on red" without so much as a pause if the coast is clear. It is not only a violation of a couple of traffic laws, it is something that almost universally alienates drivers. Come on people! You are on a 30-mile ride but can't handle losing your momentum or average speed for 30 seconds? You are making it worse for all of us who enjoy cycling.

@CSmithson

I know, I've seen siingle and double cyclists do some stupid things too. Just last week on Airport Road, right past the school heading toward Pinehurst were 2 cyclists. They were riding side by side and the cyclist on the outside never bothered to move ahead or behind the other cyclist and you know there is plenty of shoulder to ride on Airport Road. All of the cars had to wait for oncoming cars to go byin order to pass this arrogant cyclist.

@CSmithson I see "packs" of riders 3 and 4 (sometimes more) deep that do not move over for cars making it impossible to safely pass them. As for passing cars on the right at redlights...it happens nearly daily as I am coming into Southern Pines.

This rain has been great for my homeward commute!!
