Wow! Last Friday night was wild! Union Pines beating East Montgomery in overtime. Jackson Maples' 60-yard field goal. Reagan coming back to beat Pinecrest. Albemarle getting upset by Mount Pleasant. And that's just the "tip of the iceberg".

But, in terms of records, I fell back to mediocrity. Went 14-6 (70%) bringing my season record to 63-17 (78.8%). What in the world???

I thought the Patriots had a chance versus the visiting Reagan Raiders. Mount Pleasant took apart Albemarle, though it really doesn't matter if it was a 3A school defeating a 1A considering this long rivalry. Was also shocked about E.E. Smith defeating Douglas Byrd. I could not believe Overhills pounding Harnett Central 58-0, which was the Jags first ever over the Trojans. And boy, did Scotland head coach Richard Bailey get the troops fired up as the Fighting Scots dismantled Jack Britt at The Boneyard. Finally, to sum up last week's downfalls, West Montgomery shocked Jordan-Matthews.

In the CarolinaPreps.com Top 10 polls, Richmond remains at #2 in 4A while Matthews Butler remains #1. In the 3A poll, Douglas Byrd drops out while Northern Guilford stays at #1. Also, in the 1A poll, Swain County takes over the top spot as former #1 Albemarle drops to #6. North Rowan remains at #8.

Conference play begins this week for the Yadkin Valley 1A and Cape Fear Valley 3A conferences. Southeastern 4A conference action begins on September 26. Less games to pick from, thus, I can't get too many wrong. My percentages are sinking. Got to get the numbers back up!

This week, I've got a "two for one special" on the "Game of the Week." The first game is Gray's Creek at Douglas Byrd. Whoever wins this contest has the inside track of winning the Cape Fear Valley 3A conference title. Will the Eagles bounce back after losing to E.E. Smith? In the second game, South Stanly travels to North Rowan as current South Stanly head coach Tasker Fleming visits his previous stomping grounds. I'm still surprised over the Rebel Bulls 64-41 win over cross county rival and future Yadkin Valley conference foe, North Stanly. I wasn't really expecting a shootout, but could either North Rowan or South Stanly surprise Albemarle in conference play?
