Looks like the Albemarle Bulldogs, state 1AA football champions in 2009 and 2010, will continue their domination of the Yadkin Valley 1A conference. The big question around Stanly County is whether they can "threepeat" as state 1AA champs?

Of course, West Montgomery, North Rowan and South Stanly will try to challenge the Bulldogs for conference supremacy but will come up short. And, in the bottom tier are the usual suspects: East Montgomery, Chatham Central, South Davidson and North Moore. These teams will try to stay out of the conference basement and perhaps sneak in the state playoffs with a win or two or even three.

I'm still hoping that North Moore can be competitive in football. Of course, numbers of players turning out for workouts are usually low. I know the coaches and what players that do come out for football will work hard and put forth maximum effort. But, it's hard to compete with teams like Albemarle and West Montgomery who usually suit up 40 or 50 some players during a regular season game while the Mustangs have just enough to scrimmage 11 on 11 during practice. I think the Mustangs could have some potential this year and could grab a few wins. They just need to stay free of injuries and stay motivated.

  4. South Stanly, 4-3, 4-7
  5. East Montgomery 3-4, 5-6
  6. Chatham Central, 2-5, 4-7
  7. South Davidson, 1-6, 1-10
  8. North Moore, 0-7, 0-10
