Well, last week was respectable. Not as good as last week (88.2%), but still decent. Went 16-3 last week (84.7%). The overall mark is now 62-13 (82.7%). Games of the week include Westover traveling to Hoke County (current Hoke County head coach Milton Butts takes on his former school) and Scotland County visiting Anson County.

Jordan-Matthews (got shocked by West Montgomery at home), Pine Forest (losers to Westover) and South View (Hoke County finally wakes up) disappointed me last week. Conference play starts next week for Yadkin Valley 1A and Cape Fear Valley 3A teams while conference play for the Southeastern 4A Conferences begins on October 1. Will conference play bring my marks up or down? With less games to pick from when teams play conference play, there's no telling what may happen.

In the Yadkin Valley 1A, Albemarle and West Montgomery are going strong as both teams are 3-1. South Stanly has surprised me with an 0-3 start. The same can be said for South Davidson (0-4). I figured North Rowan would start slow at 0-3 playing larger schools. North Moore is still in learning mode having not yet won a game (0-3). I'm surprised that Chatham Central has one win (1-2). I just didn't expect it to be over Union Pines. East Montgomery may be the team to surprise folks as the Eagles have a 3-1 mark.

Douglas Byrd (4-0) will definitely be the team to beat in the Cape Fear Valley 3A conference. I think Gray's Creek (3-1) will solidly be in second. Could be a battle for third in the conference. Westover (1-3) is definitely not the same team as last year since Coach Milton Butts, some of his coaching staff and even some of his players have left and went to Hoke County. Southern Lee, Western Harnett and Overhills all remain winless with 0-4 overall marks. Union Pines is 2-2 but those two wins have came over weak 1A teams. Besides Byrd and GC, are the rest of the teams in the CFV 3A woefully weak or are they just warming up? UP has definitely played the weakest non-conference schedule compared to other conference teams, and it may hurt them big time when conference play comes around soon.

I still have to say the Southeastern 4A is a tossup. Richmond County, 3-1, will bounce back from the loss to Butler. Lumberton is roaring strong with 4-0 record. Purnell Swett (3-1) will make some noise in the conference and could win a few conference games. Scotland County has lost two after having won their first two games and will be the conference spoiler. Hoke County, 1-3 has gotten off to a slow start (1-3) but will make some noise in the conference. Pinecrest, 4-0, is doing as well as expected considering their weak non-conference slate, and could be in for a very rude awakening when conference play rolls around.

And it may get worse for UP when conference play rolls around.
