It's hot. When it gets like this I can't help but think our of favorite four-legged friends -- cats and dogs. Please keep your pets hydrated with plenty of fresh, clean water. Also, if they are outdoors, please make sure they have a shaded area to get a break from the heat. Also, if you can, keep your pets inside when temps get real high. For more pet tips click here.
On another dog-related matter, we are hearing rumors of one dog, maybe two, running free in the town.
Al Carter, with Moore County Animal Control, confirmed there is a dog at large in S.P. and officers from his department have responded to a couple of calls regarding it.
The animal has reportedly been dog aggressive. Carter advised that residents who see a stray animal should report it to the local police or to animal control, or both.
For those worried that the dog could be rabid, Carter said the last confirmed case of rabies in a dog in Moore County occurred in 1997.

Al Carter also said that there is no dog fighting in Moore County. According to emergency vets, dog attacks are the single largest cause of canine death in Moore County

"Reportedly dog aggressive"? My 10 pound dog, Mac was nearly mauled to death by that dog last Sunday while I was walking him, on leash, in my neighborhood. I took him home from Small Animal Emergency Service 36 hours later with 3 broken ribs, 5 drainage tubes, and more staples than I can count. He had four puncture wounds, a tear in the body wall, and the skin had been shaken loose from the connective tissue.Southern Pines is rife with unrestrained dogs and Animal Control is stunningly blase about the situation. The understatement in your article goes a long way toward explaining why Animal Control has been able to let the situation get to this point. This dog has been wandering around Southern Pines for months, and is now so emboldened that it is only a matter of time until it attacks a small child. I can tell you first hand how much damage it can inflict in the blink of an eye. A community meeting is being held July 16 at 7pm at the Douglas Community Center for anyone concerned about the number of dogs running unrestrained in this area. Linda Selbach

If that dog is causing such problems....some good intentioned citizen please simply shoot and kill the problem. ALSO....The golf courses are a natural breeding ground for invasive coyotes. They are munching down the cats and small to medium size pet dgs in the housing areas. Coyotes are another source of great problems for both pet owners and possibly even children. Be wary of them...Mike

I'm thinking a description of the dog(s) would be helpful for us S.P. residents who walk around with and w/o pets & children. Please?

Just got off the phone with animal control and they said the 2 at large dogs were picked up this morning and in their custody.

Ever since the Acme Company moved into Moore County and Time Warner bought out RoadRunner Cable, the coyote problem has gotten worse.

Absolutely Courseaire...I had noticed that myself. The two ton Acme safe dropped with pinpoint accuracy is devastating, but nobody seems capable of doing that since the Roadrunner is not available. I have found that the .22-250 and .204 with speeds at around 4200 fps also do an adequate job.....Mike
