Brutal. Awful. Terrible. Inept. Shameful. Disgraceful. Disappointing. Worst ever. Some of the words or phrases used to describe Monday's men's basketball D-I title game between the UConn Huskies and Butler Bulldogs. I have to agree. I could also add, abysmal, dreadful, horrid, horrendous and pitiful to the mix. It truly was one of the worst games I have ever seen. And what made it twice as bad was the fact that it was a giant turd in the punchbowl of an otherwise entertaining tournament. And it will probably forever overshadow the accomplishments of the Bulldogs. Back-to-back appearances in the title game is no small feat. It shouldn't. Butler was a fundamentally sound, defensive-minded team, offensively skilled team with a high Basketball IQ. The problem was Monday was a perfect storm to sink Cinderella's ship. Overall, UConn was a bit more skilled. They were more athletic and had the best two players on the floor. In the end, they were stymied by the dogged Butler defense, but sometimes it just isn't your night. For Butler the anticipation of a crown for Cinderella crashed and burned under a flurry of turnovers, bricks and air balls that let the collective air out of a nation the greatly anticipating something better.
