In my quest to drop a few lbs and get in better shape (round, gelatinous is a bit tired and old, thanks) I have added another wrinkle to the weight loss game.
After this week's workout (more on that below) I was 15 pounds from my first of three goals. To make shedding those lbs more interesting Randy and I (he proposed it, but I was thinking it) to make a little wager. Being a gambling man, I accepted.
Here's the wager. If I drop 15 by May 4, he owes a charity of my choice $100. If I don't make it, I owe the same amount to a charitable cause of his choosing.
Randy already has his charity selected, and I will tell you more about it in coming posts. The problem is, I don't have one selected. So I am asking for your help.
Please send me the name and brief description of the charity you would like to see Randy donate to. Also include a short reason why the money is needed.
Following my glorious victory on May 4, I will select a charity.
But that's not all. Since this morning I have been thinking about other ways I can give back and I decided on another idea that I will tell you about later this week. (Gotta keep you reading, right?)
But now on to the work out and the scale.
First, we worked on TRX again. I have to admit those straps are a pretty cool, intense total body workout. You can really feel the ol' muscles working. I am even thinking about taking a class in TRX.
No kettle bells this week. (Kinda miss those guys. Guess they must be on Spring break). Plenty of kick boxing and I pushed the weighted punching bag all around the exercise room.
The bottom line, I was whipped. It was a tough workout that I will feel in the morning and for a couple days to come.
But it was a good week to get back to low numbers. I was down another 2.5 pounds, getting us to the magic number of 15.
And don't forget to send me a worthy charity and how it would benefit from Randy's Benjamin.

Really is this news worthy...get out there and do some real reporting. I feel the majority of the readers could care less about your workouts. Just go ahead and donate your $100.00 to a worthy charity and keep your workout stories for your friends and family!

@Mtneer88 - This is a blog - it doesn't have to be newsworthy. What has happened to supporting your fellow man when he is working so hard to be healthier and give to charity at the same time?

Tom,
My uncle is fighting lung cancer (stage Four) so I have seen first hand the horrible affects the disease has on a person.
I am aslo fairly confident almost everyone has a friend who smokes... Heck I smoke. It is a nasty and potentially deadly habit I wish I never picked up and hope to quit soon!!!
So I am going to lobby for www.anti-smoking.org -- Smokefree America -- The foundation's mission is to motivate youth to stay tobacco free, and to empower smokers to quit.
The goals of the Foundation are:
--To establish in-house programs to fight tobacco use at the local, regional and national levels
--To prevent youth smoking through our websites and school-based educational programs;
--To help empower those suffering from tobacco addiction to quit successfully, through our websites and other educational venues;
--To enact peer teaching programs, empowering youth to defend themselves against the onslaught of advertising and peer pressure
AND
--To implement programs to remind physicians to take a proactive role with their smoking patients, intervening and asking them to quit
Readers can go to the foundation's "youth site" at www.notobbacco.org for more information
On a personal note I applaud your efforts and will offer my full support to your final decision by publicly pledging to make a $50 contribution to the charity you choose once u win.
Go TEE and DROP that fif-TEEn like Tyson dropped Spinks!!!! (and if anybody doesn't get that reference -- u better ask somebody..lol)

Hi Tom,
I'd love to see you donate to an animal charity. In this time of economic crisis, most people will stop giving to animal charities first. Why don't you consider the Humane Society or the ASPCA? They really need the funds and you would be doing a wonderful thing to help our little furry friends who can't speak for themselves. Good luck with your endeavor!

Just get off ur fat duff and quit eatin so much, nobody CARES! And start helping out the people in this county that need ur help, u don't need to be acknowledged for it, nobody needs to know that u did a good thing. Go to an elderly persons home n bring them some groceries or firewood or cut their grass. And leave them a few dollars for their heating bill...don't tell anyone, just DO IT. I pick 3 people each day to help, everyday, I will do something nice for them, different people each day, some of them, infact, most of them, I don't even know. If I am at the grocery store and see someone in need, I buy something extra that I know they can't afford, even if it is a box of cookies or fresh fruit. Out in the parking lot, I give it to them and say "God bless you, this is for u." Sometimes, that's all I can afford to do, other times, I might bring them a load of firewood or paint their porch. We have chickens, and we give all our fresh eggs away, we don't eat eggs, but raise chickens to help the needy. I never want any recognizion for my good deeds, just being able to help is all I need.

You be careful you don't break your arm patting yourself on the back.
poncho 3 years, 1 month ago
Not trying to pat myself on the back, don't need to, no body needs to give me a pat on the back, it's something I have always done, trying to help out people. I know how it is to be poor, I once lived in my car. In our house, the day u graduated from high school, or turned 18 yrs of aqe, our parents threw us out of the house. Male, female, didn't matter. And it also didn't matter that u had no where to go. I left 30 min after high school graduation, hitch-hiking to a friends house, an hr away. She said I could stay in the old junk car in the back yard, and I did. A black snake also lived in the car, and my friend told me "just hit the car with this baseball bat n it will scare him out." Thats what I did, but when I would wake up, old black snake himself was still there. So, no, I don't need a pat on the back, I know how it is to be hungry with my place to lay my head. I will always look for the unfortunate and do as much as I can to help and they always thank me.

And by the way, those people that were susposed to be my loving parents moved out of state, lol. (without telling me) I found out from the neighbors when I went to visit my parents. True stuff! Not gonna bore u with details, but I am a survivor.

For poncho: You should be commended for unselfishly helping others. However when a public personna like Tom shares his journey to better health, he most certainly will inspire someone else to do same. This is encouragement no less valuable that your good works....especially when a charity will benefit. Look at the books that have been written by cancer survivors, alcoholics, victims of domestic or sexual abuse, paraplegics, parents who have lost children ... these are more than cartharsis. They are kinship. It's not easy to tell the world that you're overweight nor is it easy to do something about it. Keep this in mind before criticizing a sincere effort. debster ...and how 'bout those Blue Devils?

I want to say I am sorry to Tom and everyone else that read my insults. I am so sorry, it was mean, hurtful and rude. I am sorry. Promise it will not happen again. Please forgive me. Tom, ur doing a great job with the weight loss, keep it up. I was just trying to be a butt and inspire u to lose, inspiring the wrong way, I might add. Keep up the great writing, again I am sorry.

RIP...Poncho.
@Tom - I wish you the best of luck with your weight loss quest! Certainly sounds like you are determined and in the right frame of mind to make it HAPPEN!!!! My 'other half' & I are having our own 'Biggest Loser' battle here at home.
No matter who loses the weight first, between you and your friend, you both will be winners in the end AND a charity will benefit as well. Good Job!
The Humane Society has a soft place in my heart!
