Shouldn't Golf Carts Pull Over?

Last week I found myself behind the dreaded "golf cart". It was 5pm. Traffic was hectic. As I pulled into The Gun Club, I slowly followed, expecting the person to pull over. Well he wouldn't. He just keep driving in the middle of the lane, ignoring me. It wasn't safe to pass him, so I had to follow him for a good 7 minutes. Darn it, he was going my way. I didnt want to honk the horn and scare the elderly person. So I just kept following for a few more minutes. Finally in a safe area to pass, I roared pass this driver, honking my horn and giving him the evil eye. I was surprised to see the driver of this cart with headphones on. Yes headphones.! He wouldn't even look my way. He never pulled his cart to the side of the road, and I know he saw me. I saw him looking in those little mirrors they have. I hate this new town ordinance. It would be nice if pinehurst pd patroled this area in the afternoons. I believe that golf cart driver was being spiteful!

O.....M....G!!!!!!! YES!!!!! These golf cart people should be ticketed for holding up traffic. Some of them are okay, but the majority of them are jerks. I live off Lake Forest Rd. One day I was trying to get to work and this guy was smoking a pipe ( A PIPE!!!!) with his fancy autumn tweeds on, holding up traffic. There were about 15 cars behind him and he WOULD NOT BUDGE!!!!! I honked my horn, was yelling for him to move. NOTHING. They don't realize what a nuisance they are, not to mention endangering other people. I HATE THEM!!!!! I'm a golfer. I know the rules and the etiquette and what these golf cart drivers are doing is pompous and dangerous. Start ticketing them Pinehurst PD.

Well, it was ridiculous. What is even more ridiculous is when summer rolls around. I live around the block from the pool on St. Andrews. When the pool opens and kids are out of school, parents let there kids drive the carts to and from the pool. Sometimes the carts have as many as 4 people in it and even though a parent is present, you SHOULD NOT let an 8 year old drive along St. Andrews.

After 25 years I am yet to see any golf cart with a LICENSE PLATE on it so how is it that these people are driving on the roads to begin with? Only in Pinehurst!

robbie, per the VillageofPinehurst.org rules and regs for golf carts:

7-4.4 Operation of Golf Carts on Public Streets and Roads. a. Authority to Regulate. Pursuant to Session Law, 2008-71 Senate Bill 1598, as enacted by the North Carolina General Assembly, the Village of Pinehurst is authorized, by ordinance, to require the registration of, and regulate the operation of golf carts upon any public street or road within the Village. b. Operation on Public Streets and Roads. It is unlawful to operate a golf cart on a public street or road within the Village of Pinehurst unless the following requirements are met: 1. The golf cart may only be operated on streets and roads that meet the requirements below:

Ease up to the [bag] holder ~ not the driver's wife ~ and give them a toot from the chrome horn. If they don't move - then drift back about 30 feet and floor it. They will move by virtue of physics.

Robbie, there are both state and local ordinances that cover golf carts on the roads. I'd suggest reading them before getting all pissy about it. VillageofPinehurst.org is a good resource on this.

If these people aren't following the rules they need to be cited. I don't run into the problem but I can see it being a nuisance. At the very least getting a warning might let them know that they are in the wrong and it's not just a bunch of cranky senior citizens that don't want them on the road period.

I like Toda's method the best.

Re: your question, by visiting the VillageofPinehurst.org we will find the answer to be YES!

"Golf carts must be operated to the extreme right of the roadway and must yield to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic."

It's an interesting read, follow ChevyBoy's suggestion and read it.

Moore County is well known as a major golf mecca. A lot of folks have chosen to live here due to the climate and incredible golf. I have lived here all of my life (yes, an actual Moore County native) and golf carts have always been a part of certain areas. Pinehurst, Whispering Pines, Seven Lakes...its just part of who 'we' are. So, if this is all we have to fuss about...I'd say everything is going just fine. Be patient, drive around them and give a friendly wave.

While I agree in part with the impatient drive who did not like following the golf cart with head phones on. I don't agree with anyone passing a golf cart when the road is marked with a double yellow line. I sure in this state and any other it means "Don't Pass at Any Time".

Village Acres, like many urban areas of Pinehurst does not have much room to pull over and in many areas it's down right unsafe to pull over. I walk many miles a week on Pinehurst roads and meet young ladies often pushing a three wheel double stoller with two children/babies in it. They are pushing or jogging on the wrong side of the street with head phones on and expect everyone to just cross the double yellow line. They don't seem to be considering the fact that they are on the wrong but safe side of the road but they can not tell if traffic is coming the other direction. It's not safe for anyone to pass on a double yellow line. That's why the road is marked that way.

Try a little patience. You will get home but safely. Thanks and have a good day

Yes ~ Mike you are correct that passing on a double yellow line is a ticketable offense. I believe the law is written for the regular flow of traffic, which excludes golf carts and mothers who exercise. Since I don't have stroller age children or a golf cart, I think I'll take my riding lawn mower for a spin around scenic Pinehurst. In addition, there is a law in NC that refers to impeding the regular flow of traffic. Perhaps the Pinehurst Police could research traffic impediment and enforce the rest of the NC General Statues. Laws may change but when I worked for Chief James W. Wise, golf carts had to meet all traffic laws, the same as a motor vehicle: insurance, plates, inspection stickers, and safety equipment as well as lighting. They had an obligation to yield to larger motor vehicles by pulling off the main traveled roadway. Grassy areas are considered state right-of-way. So they should pull over! If not I consider them to be impeding the regular flow of traffic and can expect a chrome horn to help them out of their trance. It's not a matter of patience, it's a matter of what laws are enforcable and a golfers disrespect for state laws. Plain and simple.
