This is the story of Page, a black/brown hound dog. People will refer to her as "just an old coon hound". Well let me tell you about Page. She has lived in our community for 4 years in the woods of Pinehurst fending for herself.
Why is she there....abandonment, product of lack of spay /neuter, or just plain old neglect. Nobody really knows where she came from but she is here nonetheless. She will come out to greet you but never let you get close enough to touch her. She is skittish of humans but loves other dogs. In May of 2010 Page joined up with a local owned male dog and two months later four babies were born. To protect her babies, she dug a den in the dirt beside a brook. She would keep them there and nurse, love them and protect them. Our Animal Control got a few complaints of this black dog out barking at people passing by. Page never bit or even attempted to attack anyone. Now, there is a group of concerned citizens that have been trying to trap Page. Page is one of the most intelligent dogs that you will ever know. She has avoided getting trapped for many years. This group of concerned citizens has been getting more successful each day in their trapping efforts. Page is no ordinary dog. She has to gain trust in you before she will let you approach her. This group of citizens has gained her trust. She hasn't hurt anyone. On October 7, 2010, there were orders to shoot and kill Page. There is no need for shooting a dog for doing what a dog or any momma would do....protect her babies. Knowing how to deal with the animal can avert a crisis. Perhaps our county should reconsider their procedures. Why not a tranquilizer gun?
This group of concerned citizens has a place for Page and her puppies. The citizens will incur all medical costs for Page and her puppies. They just want the opportunity to trap her in a humane way. Please support our rescue efforts with Page. Page is part of this community and we want to get her off the streets, not put a bullet in her.
