Pinehurst and Aberdeen save $40 and $54, respectively, for every ton of "household waste" diverted from the landfill to the recycling facility. Pinehurst recycles about 150 tons/month for a monthly savings of $6,000. Aberdeen recycles about 59 tons/month for a monthly savings of $3,186.

Language arts teacher Lisa Elliott had her head shaved by hairstylist Nichole Jenkins during an after-school event at Crains Creek Middle School May 3. Elliott promised students she would shave her head if they helped her raise money to participate in the Disney Half Marathon, which raises funds for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. Students and the school community held Elliott to her promise and helped her raise more than $4,000. Enlarge

What landfill does all of the recycling go to?

doughnuts - All recyclable materials collected by Pinehurst and Aberdeen are trucked to Pratt Inc. in Fayetteville, a recycling facility - not a landfill.

It is so easy to do. Less than one quarter of our "trash" goes to the landfill. The rest gets recycled.
