Reuben's Yadkin Valley 1A Conference 2012 Regular Season Football Predictions
Last season did not produce any state championships for YVC 1A teams, but two teams almost made it to state title games. Last year' conference champion, Albemarle, almost made it to the 1A title game, but lost to eventual state 1A champion Murphy 42-41 in double overtime in the West ...
Rethinking American hegemony
The 67th anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing should remind us that many have died under American hegemony. While the U.S. is better than her predecessors, and almost certainly better than the alternative of Chinese hegemony, there is something inherently immoral about having a global superpower. People in all countries should work for multilateralism.

GLASS Facts For You . . . .
Glass is one of the few materials that can be recycled infinitely without losing strength, purity or quality. Glass bottles and jars are collected in most U.S. communities at the curb, at drop-off collection sites and through container deposit programs in 10 states. Using recycled glass uses 40% less energy ...
Pizza Box Mystery . . . recycle or not to recycle
Many of us think that we can recycle pizza boxes. However, the problem is the grease/oil from the cheeses; etc. that pose a problem. The box itself is of course recyclable but the stained food portion on the bottom or sometimes the top of your box is what causes serious ...

Not Your Ordinary Swiss Army Knife
This morning, I called my friend and said I needed to get some pictures off of her computer for a story in the paper. She replied that she had too many to send via email. She asked me, "Why don't you bring your USB flash drive, and I'll get them to you that way?" My USB flash drive?
Recycling Saves Energy
Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours -- or the equivalent of a half a gallon of gasoline. The amount of wood and paper we (in the U.S.) throw away each year is enough to heat 50,000,000 homes for 20 years. Each ton ...

The Impotence of Easing in a Balance Sheet Recession
The Global Financial Crisis is in its fourth or fifth year. Global economic indicators point to a world economy where there is stagnate growth, unacceptably high unemployment and seemingly no end in sight. In the United States unemployment is hovering around just above 8%, PMI is just above 50 and declining, GDP growth is slowing, and personal income and spending are flat or falling. Because of such news of deterioration, the Federal Reserve has announced that it will continue Operation Twist-- the selling of short-term securities and the simultaneous purchase of long-term securities. However, like the second wave of quantitative easing, Operation Twist may have little effect on the economy.
