Language arts teacher Lisa Elliott had her head shaved by hairstylist Nichole Jenkins during an after-school event at Crains Creek Middle School May 3. Elliott promised students she would shave her head if they helped her raise money to participate in the Disney Half Marathon, which raises funds for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. Students and the school community held Elliott to her promise and helped her raise more than $4,000. Enlarge

"I left guessing did she treat me like because I am black, or I don't look poor enough for Moore County Free Clinic."
You didn't help yourself in the least with this letter. For someone with a masters degree you should know that a scathing letter in a local paper is the last way to deal with a problem such as this. Casually tossing in the race card is revealling. You chose to attack Ms Bateman in this public forum knowing she could not respond with the other side of the story. You wonder if you can do your volunteer hours there, you have to be joking. Maybe theres a reason you have a masters degree yet remain unemployed. I know this sounds harsh but I suspect I won't be alone. BTW, as far as I know I do not know Ms Bateman. I am sure after reading this letter local health care providers will be ringing the phone off the hook to volunteer at MFC.

You need to get a refund for that Master's Degree. It left you without the ability to write a comprehensible paragraph.
And, apparently, the ability to think critically. A public attack of a person volunteering at a FREE clinic is rude, selfish and thoughtless. And as fugitiveguy adds, throwing out the race card is revealing. If you don't get your way, it must undoubtedly be due to race. Couldn't possibly be anything else, could it?
Apparently, you went to the emergency room which costs all of us when you could have gone to the Free Clinic and gotten treatment. Not very thoughtful of you.

Moore Free Care Clinic is a "free" not for profit organization. Nobody is entitled to help there! The volunteers and staff (low paid I'm sure) do everything they can to help everyone in this community with; very little money and all of it is private donations from what I hear (ie not a government agency). They work long and hard hours because the want to help. I know these people and have used them when I had no where else to turn...you are barking up the wrong tree with the race card! I heard a story that Ms Bateman has even taken her own money to buy a patient shoes. There is not a masters degree on my resume, but I know generous people when I see them - and these are generous and genuine people. It is sorry for you that you had this experience but maybe you should have talked to them or got to know the people before you say all this. We should thnak them that what they do isn't coming from our tax dollars.

Your grammar, as previously commented about, leaves one to believe you were pushed thru the education system by your inability to write and your obvious uncaring attitude to review your grammatical errors before hitting "post comment." The last time I read this type of English was in input from a group of students from Fayetteville State who were in their final year of their Masters in Business. I could not believe that they even made it thru high school, much less believe they were in their final of their Masters program. The input was from my husbands group project that he was having to re-write to be submitted for the group. Guess they got there the way a class mate of mine did who went to Sandhills Community college. I went to class early one day to type a paper for submission in an English class and the teacher was helping the student do his paper (actually sitting at the computer typing and narrating his paper for him) before class started. (I'm sure this was an isolated event and not all teachers do this for their students, but the student was African American and so was the teacher.) I don't know why people believe they are getting themselves ahead when they cannot even articulate or spell and they consistently leave words out and/or use the inappropriate word (i.e there for their.) Only makes those of us who get to pay for our education realize just how "mucked up" the system really is and why the United States is falling behind in education.I only have an Associates degree which I helped pay for personally and as a benefit of serving in our fine United States military! Oh yea, this was about Deborah Bateman. I don't know her, but she is volunteering her time to help those less fortunate...and why did you go to the Emergency Room if you were in the system for the Health Department?

I apologize to everyone who made a comment I know having a bad day does not excuse my comment or behavior. I truly do apologize for my behavior, and my comment about the Moore County Free Care Clinic.

Well done, Gloria47. We all have bad days sometimes and I hope you get better.

Folks need to realize that others have bad days and folks do things they wouldn't ordinarily do. Some folks have more bad days than others, but heck, we all have bad days. Hopefully, Gloria47, you can put this behind you and move on forward to better things.
