Union Pines' got its first state champion of the winter sports season Saturday, when John Minott won the 1A/2A/3A indoor title in the triple jump in Chapel Hill. His first attempt was good enough to give him a first place finish at the State Meet
Minott claimed the crown with a jump of 47.08 feet. Asheville's Daisuan White finished second with a mark of 46.07, while T. J. Wilson of Princeton High, placed third with a leap of 46.01.75
He is the school record holder in the event for both outdoors and indoors and was a 3A state runner up in the event last year in outdoor. Minott is ranked in the top-10 in the nation in the event and is the number one ranked triple jumper in the state.
Word is UNC, NCSU and UNCW are all actively recruiting Jon and two (or maybe all three) have already offered him full scholarships.
John who has not officially commented yet on his choice, recruit status, nor signed any letter of intent, has remained tight lipped even when asked which school he is currently leaning towards choosing.
For more information about Minott's state title, check back soon on the Sports' section of The Pilot website, and look for a full story in Wednesday's paper.
