I saw a few posters/bloggers commenting about Appalachian State U having a better FB program than UNC-Chapel Hill
I like both schools, but when you look at the number of NFL players who are former Tar Heels, (including hall of fame Linebacker LT)...I have to give the nod to Carolina....and yes I know ASU beat Mich at the big house, but UNC was a power house when Peppers and Curry were there and have a long time storied football history.....plus Mich was Garbage that year...
In terms of overall history, competitiveness (year in and year out), prestige in terms of head coach position, and players that matriculate on to the NFL and make an impact, which would you pick as having the better all-around football program ?

Compare Div. Level to Div. Level App State wins hands down. App State is the "only" team in the history of NC football to win a National Championship not once not twice but three times in a row. No other college in Div 1A (formerly known as) has ever had a run of three championships in a row. UNC does have a better record of sending their star players to the NFL but ASU has had the likes of John Settle, Dino Hackett, Dexter Cokely (sp) and Bijorn Nittmo go on to play in the NFL. UNC's Pepper was indeed a force but really Currry was not what I would call a power house player. I am both a Tarheel fan in the ACC and a ASU grad thus I pull for my Mtneers in the SoCon! Speaking of prestige of head coaches...former UNC coach and present day Texas coach Mack Brown was a former coach of the ASU Mtneers! Coach Moore runs a first class football program at ASU and has been named several times as the National coach of the year for our Div. ASU will play the Gators at the swamp the last game of the season and next year ASU has already inked the deal to play the Ga. Bulldogs in Ga. As far as beating Mich. I believe they were ranked 5th in the National polls when we (ASU) beat them in their house. One of the biggest upsets of all time. I'm sure you posted this blog to drag me to the keyboard to post my position on this subject. Good job fwm2!

I think you make a brilliant case ASU88...even made a few points I was unaware of...My sis went to ASU for a spell before transferring to a private school and I love the campus and the football team...and yes Mich was ranked 5th at the time...but they were overrated you will have to admit that.
I love your ASU pride and never make it a point to hate on ASU...I have had tons of great times in Boone and Blowing Rock..just like I have had great times in Chapel Hill and Carrboro
So it is possible for ASU and UNC fans to get along...at least it was in the early 2000s anyway..lol

Pound for pound and inch for inch, does ANYONE have a better football program year in and year out?

Watch out or the NC Legislature will force UNC to play ASU just as they forced UNC and State to play EZU (ECU).
Go Heels
ASU88 3 years, 1 month ago
@fwm2 ASU NFL additional players include, Corey Lynch, Jason "Sticks" Hunter and Marques Murrell!
@CSmithson ASU would love to play UNC at Kenan...night game would be awesome for all fans! UNC will play the likes of The Citadel and Ga. Southern from the SoCon but have not extended an invitation to the boys from Boone! I wonder why...Mich game on their mind maybe? Baddour will play ECU but will not schedule the 3 time national Champions. The Fla. Gators and The Ga. Bulldogs will invite us to their house to play but not the Tarheels. Look at all the money this state is losing by not having in state teams play each other. ECU invited the Black & Gold to the opening game last season in G'Ville and ASU brought an estimated 4,000 fans "down-east"! It was a great game even thought ASU failed to make a come back in the final last min drive....however ASU did not have the services of our starting QB A. Edwards but we still gave the Pirates a run for their money. It was a great game to attend and the Pirate & Mtneer fans displayed great team spirit and showed respect to one another! So since you are an alumni of UNC ask your AD to step up to the challenge and invite those "mountain boys" to your "little" hill and we will show you how a Championship team plays ball! And should our team win...we will not tear down your goal posts because we are used to winning and we have our own goal posts in Boone! At least in Kenan we will only hear GO Heels---in G'Ville the arrrh Pirates chants were a little much..they would arrrrrh for a two yard gain but they still were cool fans!

Go HOKIES!!! Beamer ball and another great season for Tyrod Taylor.
ASU88 3 years, 1 month ago
@ C Smithson Your thoughts on the ASU vs UNC football matchup? @Toda Read the blog heading..ASU or UNC which has the better football program? What does Beamer ball have to do with this blog? How many National Championships does VT have? Speaking of great season...Armanti Edwards was named the winner of the Walter Peyton award for the second year in a row...oh and by the way he graduated in 3 1/2 years with honors all while leading his football team to three national championships in a row! Check out www.goasu.com in your free time and see what an elite football program/coach is all about.

@Pat T What was the point of your entry? Inch for inch..pound for pound who has the better football program? And your answer would be....?
CSmithson 3 years, 1 month ago
@ASU
I am sure it would be a good game with good crowds. We ought to do it every once in a while.
As far as having any pull with Baddour, I'm not the guy. My Ram's Club rank is somewhere around 9,000 out of 12,000 members. I do have fairly decent football tickets though. I improved my seats pretty rapidly during the Bunting years by loyally buying season tickets when nobody else was.

@ASU88: when did App State and UNC play in the same conference? So what does this paring have to do with conference championship titles? Is this something like fantasy football?
ASU88 3 years, 1 month ago
@Toda Way before my time...I think UNC was a member of the Southern Conference prior to the start up of the Atlantic Coast Conference. I'm sure fwm2 or RD28327 can advise if this is correct. "So what does this paring have to do with conference championship titles"? I don't understand your question. Not only was ASU a three time conference champion but they were also a three time NATIONAL CHAMPION. The boys in Boone do not play "fantasy football" it's a reality check when you step on the field at "THE ROCK"! Also our former quarterbacks do not start dog fighting contests like a certain college from VA. This blog is not about burnt orange & brown (who picked those team colors)? It's about BLACK & GOLD vs Carolina Blue & White...my two favorite college teams! So Toda if you can't comment on this subject...head back to your recliner and take a nap and come back when your mind is fresh and alert!

@RD28327 I would like to hear your take on this subject?

@ASU88 ~ Perhaps ASU will have an opportunity someday to play football with the big boys as opposed to the equivalent of high school football. The ridge runners play well with the other kids...in their conference.ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

45-year UNC fan and ASU grad here. In a sense, comparing the two schools is not really apples to apples. The difference in scholarships, budget, recruiting opportunities (private planes, $, national contacts, blue chip athletes), and coaches' salaries is not even remotely comparable. The issue seems to be who gets the most bang for their buck from the product on the field.
When you compare the two programs - at least over the past 5-6 years, there is no comparison. I've been to multiple games in both Chapel Hill and Boone over that time period. I defy anyone who's experienced game day in Boone to question that it is a far more electric and pumped experience than that of the Hill. This is not to say App would regularly beat UNC, but everyone would know they had been in a game.
I'd love to see App and the Heels play in Charlotte. With the large alumni contingents of both schools in that city, it would be a very successful experience for all.

UNC and Appalachian State have only played once in football and that first meeting was back in 1940 when the Tar Heels crushed the Mountaineers 56-6 in Chapel Hill.
This will be a good game to watch. App would definitely being it's fair share of fans to Chapel Hill. I definitely can't see the game being played anywhere else besides Chapel Hill. I remember when Wake and ASU had its "US 421 rivalry" from 1975-2001, they always played the game at Wake. I hope both UNC and App State can work together and make this matchup a reality.

@Holly, I agree with you re. the experience of attending a game on the hill. I've been to football games all over the country and I enjoy game day on the Hill better than any place I have gone to...better tailgating...better stadium...better weather to say the least! But you must agree that the APP ATTACK has been a force the past four years...if Kidd Brewer stadium could have been doubled it would have been busting at the seams the past four years. I would love to see ASU play UNC at no other place than in Chapel Hill! It would be a great event for the true football fans of NC! Of all the gold and glitter in Chapel Hill...one piece of gold is yet to be found in the football fieldhouse at Kenan stadium..that of a National Championship trophy. Holly if you can't agree with me on this fact then we must revoke your "YOSEF CARD"! ;) @RD28327 I have gone down the mountain to the valley of Winston Salem for numerous football games....always loved the Black & Gold rivarly. Wake stopped inviting ASU to play when we starting beating them in their house and we brought more fans to the game than they did! @TODA, Last and least...Va T may win a National Championship at the AKC trials. I think we can answer the question, "Who let the dogs out"! I like the phrase ridge runners....maybe we can adopt this name and create a theme song for our 3 time National Championship football team other than the same old song,"Weee are the Champions again"! By the way...what the heck is a Hokie? Put you left foot in...put your left foot out...put your left foot in and shake it all about! Back to your recliner and this time wipe the drool from the corner of your mouth before youy bark out a reply! :)

Forget ASU! How about LSU as the opener?

@ASU88: ACC Champions ~ BTW: Vick plays for the Eagles for now, but might come over to the Panthers....one former player who served his time.

I’m an ASU graduate and also lifelong UNC fan. Here’s a couple of observations.
I agree with Holleys: Both Boone and Chapel Hill are great places to see a football game. Good facilities, great settings, good tailgating, and good football. I also agree that having an occasional game between these two schools would be great for the State of North Carolina and great for the alumni of both schools.
If there was ever a series between these two schools history would favor UNC. The only Division 1 BCS school ASU has beaten other than Michigan are the six wins against Wake Forest. ASU has lost all five games against NC State, and two of those were shutouts. I’m sure the games would be competitive, but I see Carolina winning seven or eight out of ten against Appalachian.
Two other points. One is that UNC is hardly looked upon as being a powerhouse in football anywhere outside Orange County. Or the ACC in general lately and yeah that includes your team Hokie Toda. As for ASU fans, Armanti is gone and this upcoming season will reveal much about the near term future of this program. The three championships helped bring about the stadium renovations and the crowds, but will the crowds still pack the stadium if ASU goes back to being the just above average Southern Conference performer it has been for most of the past 40 years? Time will tell. The last five years have been magical for ASU fans, but it is hard for any program at any level to sustain success like this. But it’s been a heck of a ride. Go Heels, Go Apps!

UNC a powerhouse when Peppers and Curry were there?
Let's see, the Peppers and Curry era:
99': 3-8 2000: 6-5 2001: 8-5
UNC's "long time storied football history" includes wins over such perennial powerhouse programs like The Citadel, UCONN, Georgia Southern and Furman. The last time they won their own conference was 1980.
UNC is a basketball school. It's amazing, with all the resources at their disposal, they've never gotten it together in football. UNC, doing less with more!

@Speedys ~ now that you mentioned it, who won the ACC Championship last season? Go ahead...I know it's difficult ~ just say it!
