Simpson's Surprise

Webb Simpson snuck in the back door with two strong rounds on the weekend to win the U.S. Open, staying on course while others on the leader board faltered at the end. Likeable Jim F looked like a sure bet with three holes to go. Clearly the USGA's desire to make the course the "severest test in golf" was accomplished at The Olympic Club course for the U.S. Open, with no one finishing at even par. It made for great television golf and for the first time ever I spent a good part of four consecutive days watching a golf tournament. One new thing I noticed was that golfers are starting to rival NASCAR drivers by the number of logos on their outfits. I counted seven on one player, six on many of them. Probably shouldn't be surprised, but hadn't noticed that level of corporate sponsorship in golf before.
