While down in Hamilton, Ga yesterday for a civil court case (as a witness), I gathered with our clatch outside the courthouse just prior to going inside. As we stood clustered there, making small talk, two courthouse lawyers hurried by wearing seersucker suits, their coat tails flapping behind. One finished up his fashion statement with a bow tie, the other with a red tie and buck shoes. It was a timeless snapshot of a small town court house scene.
I love seersucker, and own a couple of pairs of pants and a jacket that doesn't match either pair. When my waistline is behaving, I can actually wear them. There is nothing so comfortable as a good pair of seersucker pants. You've got to have courage to wear a whole suit though, 'cause it's a little much, methinks. I was reminded of the beloved character Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird. Nonetheless, today I wore my seersucker slacks to work for probably the last time this year. Summer, you see, is just about over.

Hardly over. Today you need seersucker shorts! Maybe you also remember Haspel summer suits, in a pale khaki. So nice. And whatever happened to short-sleeved Madras sport shirts that faded with each wash? The women's equivalent is pure linen, which has put many a dry cleaner's child through college. Men wore linen, too, but left it wrinkled....all before widespread AC. debster, a longtime satorial-watcher.
