Divorce must be the distraction

Interesting that I saw a news item on Tuesday that Tiger Woods and his wife officially divorced after months of speculation, but no hard facts. Three days later, he shoots his best score of the year. You suppose that maybe the reason he hasn't played well most of the year is because he's been distracted by calls by lawyers needing answers during his PGA rounds and during practice hours, and maybe he's not as washed up as a lot of people were saying. I'm not a big Tiger fan, but I respect his ability as a golfer, and I don't think that's gone anywhere. All that stuff he was doing on the sidelines won't be cheatin' from here on, so he can play with a clear conscience. I'm not saying it's all right, just sayin' don't be surprised to see him leave the field in the rear view next year.

The word is motivation, not distraction. With $100 million settlement, plus child support, plus lawyers' fees, plus many new names on his, uh, dance card Tiger's got to start earning again. Supporters (read that endorsees) may forgive a philanderer...but never a loser.

Of course Tiger needs motivation to make money, but he's been found out, and he doesn't like it. The game is up. With most of these serial cheaters (I'm not talking about a mistake), most of the fun is in the chase and the deception. He fooled just about everyone. Now his reputation is in tatters and many people don't like him. How the mighty do fall.

The mighty do fall ... then fans take pity and the offender rides back on a surge of forgiveness. Maybe Tiger has fallen farther than the handsome young president(s) who also made more than one "mistake" but regained popularity, even adoration. Another factor: For the most part, men are responsible for Tiger's kingship. If he starts winning, they will not only forgive and forget -- they will hoist him back onto the throne...and buy the products he is hawking. Dontcha think?

No Debster, I don't. While men may have different ideas of Tiger than women do, he's too risky to put back on the throne. It's not just a matter of winning anymore. Tiger has hurt too many people. Worse than that, he's fooled a whole lot more with his rampant deception. Women, religious groups, and the older folks don't like him one bit, and the vendors know that. They're too afraid to upset the religious right in this country. Here's something else: there's probably more coming out about Tiger down the road. What would all those sports companies do then, with his charming face all over their products? It's just not worth it. He's a has-been.

Only time will tell this Tiger's tale. I hope you're right. But don't forget Jesse Jackson, Bill Cosby and other paragons who bounced back after fathering children out of wedlock or whatever. I'm sure Tiger's handlers will keep his love life quiet for a long time. Tiger's young, resilient and rich. He doesn't deserve the adoration...but if he gets back his game I still think he'll be popular...everywhere but in Sweden.

Debster, you can't compare Tiger with Bill Cosby and Jesse Jackson. These two are older gentlemen in long-term marriages and after they had a baby out of wedlock, their wives forgave them. Notice they are still in their marriages. I'm not saying it's right or that I'd do it, I'm just saying that's the way it is. Most people I know don't respect Jesse too much anyway. As far as Tiger's handlers go, they will try to keep the affairs silent. But down the road, it may be far too lucrative for these girls to talk with the media than to get paid off by Tiger. It may be kharma after all. I'm telling you, Debster, whether Tiger gets his game back or not, he will forever be on the outside looking in. And the shrewd vendors know he's too risky in boycott-happy America.

No, you can't compare Tiger to anybody...but any instance involving a famous and respected public figure is fair game. Let's touch base on this in..oh, about three years. Cynical prediction: between now and then, Tiger will make a huge (and very public) donation to some popular charity or cause. Maybe he'll build a hospital or a school, send an entire senior class to college, fund the cure for a disease. Maybe he'll "find God" and preach about it...or personally head up a relief effort in Pakistan or Haiti. Get my drift? debster

I've got your drift, Debster. Let's see what happens to Tiger in several more years, sans wife but with millions ready to impart to help his cause. Will his focus improve? How about his golfing game? Business ventures? Stay tuned for the middle-aged Tiger? Hmmmmmm
