Lime Green. Really?

So what does everyone think of the new lime green facade at El Vaquero in downtown Southern Pines? So far, I have heard quite a few "colorful" reactions- none of them terribly full of praise.

As far as I know, there is no ordinance that would apply to the color they paint their building. If they were across Bennett street, they'd be in the Historic District and have to choose from an approved palette.

Should there be rules on paint colors outside the Historic District?

If "no," is it because you think the color fits in with downtown Southern Pines?

If "yes," do we limit it to downtown? All commercial buildings? Homes?

Chris, We don't need a new regulation we just need to enforce the ones that we already have. This would certainly fall under site improvement. Seems like a clear violation to me.

Southern Pines UDO Section 191 The integration of proposed development, building, or site improvement into the existing fabric of the Town is of critical public concern. The intent of design requirements is to assure respect for the character of the Town and reduce incompatible and adverse impacts on the community. Therefore: (c) Structures shall demonstrate the general principles of good design including, but not limited to those dealing with form, mass, scale, height, texture and color. Specific consideration shall be given to compatibility with adjacent structures and neighborhoods and surrounding areas of the Town where the structures reflect the characteristics set forth in this article. I'm going to say no, there shouldn't be limits outside the Historic District.

At first I was taken aback by it a little, but the lime green is starting to grow on me. I think it reflects that funky, cheerful, artsy side of Southern Pines.

I don't think it is in keeping with Downtown Southern Pines. If we were a beach/coastal town, then it might work. If you take a look at all the other business on W. Penn, you'll see that the 'lime green' color palette isn't being used anywhere else.

The color actually affects my appetite :0)
