93 Cents for Flight 93

Students from Union Pines High School and other Moore County schools honored the memory of those who lost their lives on Flight 93 during an event Monday at the school. Flight 93 was hijacked in a planned terrorist attack on Sept. 11, 2001. It crashed into an open field near Shanksville, Pa. The event was to raise awareness of the event of Sept. 11 and to raise money for a Flight 93 national memorial. The first to talk in the video is State Representative Jamie Boles. The second speaker was Deborah Borza. Her daughter, Deora Bodley, was on Flight 93. The last speaker is Frank Guera, the grandfather of Deora Bodley.

Pinehurst Fire Department held training exercises and a controlled burn Monday of Barn No. 5 at the Pinehurst Harness Track. The department conducted several controlled burns on the upper and lower floors of the barn before the final burn to destroy the structure.

STARS Board Meeting

More than 25 parents crowded into a small conference room Friday at Sandhills Business Park on U.S. 1 in Aberdeen for a special meeting in which the STARS Charter School Board of Directors went through a training session with Jack Moyer, director of the N.C. Office of Charter Schools. The Office of Charter Schools placed the board on “governance probationary status” July 16 after learning that the board has been out of compliance with its own bylaws and has violated the state open meetings law. One of the more dramatic moments in the meeting happened when board member Bonnie McPeake resigned from the board and left the meeting. After the meeting, she said she would not resign.

Kenny Freeman, the owner of an auto body shop in West End, recently finished work on his first country album, Labor of Love. It's entirely his own product, too -- he plays all the instruments, sings every song, and did the mixing and editing. Freeman hopes one day a Nashville star will pick up his CD and record one of the songs, and he's just started work on a new album.
