The Sandhills Community College team is one of 22 teams that will be competing in the event set for Feb. 24 in Owens Auditorium on the Sandhills Community College campus. Calling themselves the "The Spellcasters," The Sandhills team includes Samantha Allen, Tricia Donadio and Vanessa Galloway.

North Moore's star junior Shakorya "Coco" Brower scored 35 points Friday against East Montgomery to eclipse the 1,000 career points milestone. She was recognized for this accomplishment after the game.

Marie Strouse shared her pet snake, Morticia, with the Episcopal Day School science club Tuesday afternoon. The club has approximately 25 third- through fifth-graders as members. The club is sponsored by fourth grade science teacher Cricket Crickmore (who got a close up view of the snake) and Betsy Hutson, third grade science teacher.

The annual Martin Luther King march was held this morning in Southern Pines. Churches, organizations, businesses and individuals were members of the large crowd that traveled through Southern PInes. The four-day celebration ended with a program at the Southern Pines Primary School.

The Rev. Nathaniel Jackson was the guest speaker at a program held at Sandhills Community College Jan. 14 to celebrate Martin Luther King Day. The program kicked off a four-day celebration that concludes Monday, Jan. 17, with a march through Southern Pines in honor of the slain civil rights leader.

The Golf Capital Chorus, billed as the See Sharp or Bee Flat team, is returning to defend its 2010 championship of the Spelling Bee. This short video, which includes the chorus offering up a song, was taken by Nita Brunner during a photo shoot to publicize the 2011 Spelling Bee for Literacy. The Golf Capital Chorus is one of 22 teams that will be competing in the event set for Feb. 24, 2011, in Owens Auditorium on the Sandhills Community College campus. Members of the three-man team are Fred Wolferman, Preston Smith and Bruce Blanton.

KT Foundation Light Show

Brothers Travis and Brad Greene put on a holiday light show to benefit the KT Foundation, a local charity that helps children who have KT Syndrome. KT Syndrome is a congenital vascular disorder. The light show is every night through Dec. 31 at 78 Cardinal Drive, Whispering Pines.

The All-County Middle School Orchestra performed at North Moore High School Thursday. The members were selected from Crain's Creek, West Pine, New Century, High Falls Elementary, Westmoore Elementary, Southern Middle School and home schoolers. The conductor was Wendy Adams, an orchestra instructor for Cumberland County schools. The video provides a snippet from both "Lean On Me" and "Don't Stop Believing."

Student Kassi Woodard invited Bright — “Survivor Jane” — for “S” week Show and Tell.
