Quiros Dominates the Field

Union Pines Claudia Quiros won the Cape Fear Valley Conference championship in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 7:09, besting the second-place finisher by 1:42.14. In this video, shot by Philip Taylor, she can be seen surging into a commanding lead. She also won the 200-yard free with a time of 2:37.53. She was also part of the Vikings second-place relay teams in the 200-yard medley and 200-yard free. The conference championships took place Thursday at Campbell University.

Capt. David J. Thompson, who lived in Pinehurst, was killed in Afghanistan Jan. 29. His body arrived in Fayetteville Feb. 5 and was transported to Boles Funeral Home in Southern Pines. The procession wound its way through Aberdeen and then north on U.S. 1 before taking the Pennsylvania Avenue exit into Southern Pines. Included in the procession were motorcyclists representing the Rolling Patriots organization.
