Pinelake Health and Rehabilitation Center was the scene for a memorial service this morning. It was one year ago when a man shot and killed eight people at the nursing home.

The Fair Barn in Pinehurst was packed with almost 500 people Friday night. As part of the Palustris Festival lineup, the dinner, dance and cabaret show proved to be a popular offering. Tom Bennett's Swing Street Band provided the music, while other entertaiment was offered by the Knollwood Sisters and the Alive and Clickin' dance troupe.

Growler Celebration March 26, 2010
A V-22 Osprey arriving was part of the celebration surrounding the 100th Growler produced at the Robbins plant. Co-owners Terry Crews and Bill Crisp brought the Growler company to Robbins a few years ago, taking over the shell of an old textile plant as the site of a facility that now has 75 workers The Growler is a Jeep-like vehicle built in various configurations. Along with a complement of Marines, it stows inside the Osprey to allow Marines to reach mission targets without having to make dangerous shore landings.

Schrein Delivers Winning Performance
Blake Elizabeth Schrein — who played the mean green villain in Union Pines High's recent production of a musical version of "The Wizard of Oz" — sets out for New York to compete in the National Shakespeare Competition Finals later this month. Here she performs her two contest-winning entries: A selection from Sonnet 18 (“Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?" — and a monologue as Puck, or Robin Goodfellow, from "A Midsummer Night's Dream" In New York, for the April 26 finals, the Union Pines senior will have to do a cold reading as well as the monologue and sonnet. Every year, the English-Speaking Union of the United States (ESU) works with students and teachers to use the works of Shakespeare as a way to help young people develop their speaking and critical thinking skills and appreciation of the English language. Schrein performed and won at the Feb. 27 branch competition held locally.

The sequance begins with Phillip Wallace grabbing the rebound and taking off. He passes to Harron Carson, who serves the ball up for Brewer (41) on the right and Towns (23) coming down the middle. Towns was given credit for the basket. The video was produced by Will Apple, who was kind enough to share it with thepilot.com. J.T. Stillwell, a Pinecrest student, shot the video.

Academy of Moore County Faces Closure
Academy of Moore County, a charter school located in Aberdeen, faces closure after the State Board of Education denied a recommendation by the N.C. Office of Charter Schools to renew the school's charter for three more years. Director of Education Allyson Schoen is leading an appeal against the state's decision. She believes the state only considered past data when rendering its decision, rather than the school's overall progress. If the appeal fails, the school will close June 30.

The village held a pre-opening party on Feb. 27 at the new Pinehurst Welcome Center, located at the Sandhills Woman's Exchange near the village center. The late Mayor George Lane championed the creation of the center. It officially opened March 2.

Becky Oldham, a West Pine Middle School teacher, kissed a goat on Feb. 19 as part of a school fundraiser. The West Pine student government raised over $1,300 to build an outdoor picnic area. The kissing took place at the end of a pep rally.
