John O‘Malley, a Southern Pines businessman, is buying and refurbishing the 143,000 sq. ft. Carthage Fabrics plant as what he described to the town board as an “incubator for start-up businesses.” His first tenant is Connectinc, a nonprofit that was the brainchild of Dr. David Bruton when he was when he was Secretary of the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services. Connectinc is a “benefit bank” connecting low and moderate income families across the state to numerous sources of support. Moore County Parthers in Progress’s Ray Ogden has worked with O‘Malley before that brought closed production centers back to life. The project will bring an initial 24 new jobs to Carthage.

Car Seat Clinic at the S. P. Fire Department
After completing a four-day course for national certification as Child Passenger Safety instructors, personnel from law enforcement, emergency medical services, fire departments and social service agencies across the state evaluated child car seats for the community at the Southern Pines Fire Department April 22. The clinic was part of the Safe Kids Buckle Up program, which educates communities about the proper installation of child safety seats in vehicles. The Southern Pines Fire Department is now a permanent car seat evaluation site for the community.

Fires in Southern Pines

Around 2:30 p.m. in Southern Pines Thursday, two fires were reported at the same time. One involved a house fire on South Mechanic Street, while the other was a car fire on South Gaines Street. Southern Pines, Aberdeen and Circle V responded to the house fire, while a unit from the Pinehurst Fire Department responded to the car fire.

During the eight-week course, students learn about the principles of good-hearted living and implement laughter into their lives through exercises. According to Shader, laughter is the best medicine for anyone seeking to bring more joy to life.

Police Tape of Car Fire

A two-crash on Monday afternoon, March 15, on N.C. 211 near Taylortown was captured on the dashboard video camera of a Taylortown police patrol car. A lone Taylortown police officer reached the scene and joined two men trying to quench the blaze with clods of dirt. An off-duty paramedic ignored the risk and climbed into the car to stabilize the injured man, who was pinned, unable to escape. The heroes in this real-life drama were honored during a recent Taylortown Town Council. Police Sgt. Joseph Scott, paramedic Joy Holden and two other men, Keith Rea and Frankie Royall, were hailed as heroes.

Historical Preservation at Malcolm Blue Farm
Last Tuesday, members of the Malcolm Blue Historical Society's Board of Directors toured the grounds of Malcolm Blue Farm with two representatives from the North Carolina State Historical Preservation Office to establish a list of priorities for maintenance on the farm. The board members were especially concerned about making repairs to the grist mill building, in which fresh corn meal has been made in the past for the farm's annual farm skills festival.
