Into the Garden with the West Pine Middle School Garden Club
In its first year, the West Pine Middle School garden club has not only gotten the school's garden up and running. The handful of students have also embarked on entrepreneurial ventures to make their club projects more ambitious, including selling food grown in the garden at school. Recently, the club had a workday in the garden to build a bamboo greenhouse that will house an aquaponics system, which will grow plants and allow the students to farm tilapia, which they also hope to sell. The group started raising money for the project in November, when they first learned of aquaponics during an urban agriculture workshop called Plant the Pavement, held in Raleigh.
