Blake Elizabeth Schrein — who played the mean green villain in Union Pines High's recent production of a musical version of "The Wizard of Oz" — sets out for New York to compete in the National Shakespeare Competition Finals later this month. Here she performs her two contest-winning entries: A selection from Sonnet 18 (“Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?" — and a monologue as Puck, or Robin Goodfellow, from "A Midsummer Night's Dream" In New York, for the April 26 finals, the Union Pines senior will have to do a cold reading as well as the monologue and sonnet. Every year, the English-Speaking Union of the United States (ESU) works with students and teachers to use the works of Shakespeare as a way to help young people develop their speaking and critical thinking skills and appreciation of the English language. Schrein performed and won at the Feb. 27 branch competition held locally.
