Richard Greer, a local veteran of World War II, consulted on HBO's new miniseries, "The Pacific," which dramatizes the Marine Corps' involvement in the war against Japan. Greer fought in several major battles, including the grueling Guadalcanal campaign. A close friend, John Basilone, is featured in the series. Basilone was a Medal of Honor recipient for his heroics on Guadalcanal. He was later killed at Iwo Jima, and was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross. Greer provided HBO with his vast knowledge of the war, along with his priceless collection of photographs.
